The best SmartStream TLM alternatives for a bank depend on which reconciliations TLM runs for you. For securities, custody and multi-asset matching at scale, Duco, FIS Data Integrity Manager and Gresham Control are the realistic replacements. For cash, payments and GL work at a regional bank or credit union, ReconArt, Trintech Frontier and Bankautomation fit better and cost less to run.
Disclosure: Bankautomation is our product. It appears in the tables with its weaknesses stated, and for several TLM workloads it is not the right answer.
Why banks start looking past SmartStream TLM
SmartStream is a serious vendor. It says it has more than 2,000 customers and that its reconciliation, cash and liquidity and post-trade products run at 70 of the world's top 100 banks. Its current reconciliation line is branded Smart Reconciliations, with Smart Reconciliations Premium as the evolution of the long-running TLM Reconciliations Premium, and it can be deployed in the cloud, as SaaS or on premises. Nobody leaves TLM because it cannot match.
Banks leave, or at least run a competitive process, at three moments. The first is a major upgrade or a move from an on-premises TLM install to SmartStream's cloud, which is a re-implementation in all but name, so it is the natural time to test the market. The second is cost: TLM is quoted, and a license sized for a global bank can be heavy for a regional bank that mostly reconciles cash and payments. The third is change speed. Many TLM shops depend on a small internal team or an implementation partner to add a reconciliation or change a matching rule, and operations teams want to make those changes themselves.
Map your TLM workload before you shortlist
TLM is often the home of every reconciliation the bank has, so the replacement is rarely one product. Split the inventory by type first. The table shows where each type usually goes.
| What TLM reconciles for you | Typical volume and complexity | Realistic alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Securities, custody and trade reconciliations | Many counterparties, many asset classes, high daily volume | Duco, FIS Data Integrity Manager, Gresham Control |
| Nostro and correspondent cash (MT950, camt.053) | High volume, value date and FX differences, SWIFT formats | Gresham Control, FIS Data Integrity Manager, Bankautomation |
| Card, ATM and ACH settlement | Daily net settlement files and core postings | ReconArt, Trintech Frontier, Bankautomation |
| GL substantiation and intercompany | Monthly balances, certification and sign-off | Trintech Cadency, BlackLine, ReconArt |
| Client money and regulatory reconciliations | Rule-driven, audit-heavy, often UK or EU regimes | AutoRek, Duco |
SmartStream TLM alternatives at a glance
| Platform | Deployment | Strongest at | Pricing | Where it falls short of TLM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duco | Cloud only | Capital markets data reconciliation with self-service rule building in plain language | Quote only | Less focused on retail bank cash, card and ACH settlement |
| FIS Data Integrity Manager (formerly IntelliMatch) | Managed SaaS on Microsoft Azure or FIS private cloud | Enterprise reconciliation inventory, SLA tracking and control for large institutions | Quote only | Broad and heavy, so scope the modules carefully |
| Gresham Control (Clareti) | Cloud (Control Cloud) | High-volume transaction control across payments, treasury and securities. Gresham says more than 100 firms adopted Clareti since 2013 | Quote only | Fewer US community and regional bank references |
| AutoRek | Private cloud, SaaS (Grath) or embedded (Topa) | Financial services cash, payments, securities and client money reconciliation | Quote only | Strongest where UK and EU regulatory reconciliations matter |
| ReconArt | SaaS or customer-hosted | Bank, card, ACH and GL reconciliation for mid-size banks and credit unions | Quote. ReconArt states an average annual cost below $50,000 | Not built for securities and custody at global bank scale |
| Trintech (Frontier, Cadency) | Varies by product | US bank reconciliation heritage through Frontier, plus close and certification in Cadency | Quote only | Two product lines with different roadmaps to reconcile in the proposal |
| Bankautomation | Cloud | Daily break management for cash, nostro, card, ATM and ACH, with every break classified, routed and aged | Published, from $1,200 a month | Newer vendor, no securities or custody matching, not a close tool |
Duco: the cloud choice for capital markets teams
Duco is the alternative most often named by banks whose TLM estate is dominated by trade, position and counterparty reconciliations. It runs only in the cloud, and its pitch is that business users build reconciliations themselves using a natural language rule syntax, now with an agentic rule builder that drafts rules from a prompt. That directly answers the change speed complaint. Ask how it handles your cash and payment formats, and whether the fuzzy matching and tolerance setup is approved and versioned in a way your auditors accept.
FIS Data Integrity Manager and Gresham Control: like for like at scale
If you need a platform of the same weight as TLM, these are the two to put in the room. FIS Data Integrity Manager is the renamed IntelliMatch, used by large banks for reconciliation inventory, exception workflow and control reporting. Banks already on it will find the field compared in IntelliMatch alternatives for banks. Gresham Control, built on Clareti, handles high-volume, data-agnostic matching across payments, treasury and securities. Both are quoted, both need a real implementation, and both are credible for a global bank moving off TLM. Neither is the cheaper option.
AutoRek and ReconArt: focused and lighter
AutoRek is built for financial services reconciliation across cash, payments, securities and regulatory reconciliations, and it is especially strong where client money rules apply. ReconArt covers bank, card, ACH, intercompany and GL reconciliation for mid-size institutions, names credit unions such as MIDFLORIDA Credit Union among its customers, and is one of the few vendors here to publish a cost figure: an average annual cost below $50,000. For a regional bank whose TLM footprint is mostly cash and GL, ReconArt is a sensible first demo, and its own rivals are set out in the ReconArt alternatives guide.
Trintech: if TLM also runs your close
Some banks use TLM GL substantiation as part of the monthly close. Trintech answers both halves: Frontier, which it acquired from Fiserv in 2023, is a US bank reconciliation product, and Cadency covers close and certification. Get a written position on which platform your contract is for and how long it stays the lead product. The detail is in our Trintech alternatives for banks guide, and if BlackLine is also on your list, see BlackLine alternatives for banks.
Bankautomation: the daily break queue with a published price
Bankautomation replaces the part of TLM that operations teams live in every morning: the exception queue. It reads camt.053 and MT940 statements, card and ATM settlement files, ACH reports and core exports, matches in two passes (an exact key first, then tolerances your team approved) and turns what is left into a classified break with an owner, an age and a suggested action. Banks usually start with nostro reconciliation, where TLM is most entrenched, or with ACH reconciliation software for settlement and returns.
Pricing is public on the pricing page. Operations is $1,200 a month for one process line and 250,000 matched items. Platform is $3,900 a month with 2,000,000 items, unlimited source connections, SSO and maker-checker approvals. Institution is $9,500 a month for multi-entity groups, and Enterprise is priced to scope. It does not reconcile securities or custody positions, and it is a newer vendor without SmartStream's installed base. The resolver at the top of this page runs on a sample nostro statement, so you can judge the matching before any call.
What a move off SmartStream TLM really involves
Step 01
Inventory every reconciliation
List each TLM reconciliation with its sources, volumes, owners and the controls it evidences. Retire the ones nobody reads before you migrate anything.
Step 02
Rebuild rules, do not translate them
TLM matching rules carry years of workarounds. Rebuild each set against current data and approve every tolerance again, so the new platform starts clean.
Step 03
Decide what history moves
Open items must move. Closed history is often better archived read-only from TLM for the retention period your auditors require.
Step 04
Run in parallel
Run both systems on the same days until the match rates and open item lists agree, then switch one reconciliation type at a time.
Parallel runs fail most often for a boring reason: one system received a late, partial or missing file and the other did not. Before you compare two engines, make sure every inbound statement and settlement feed is checked for arrival time, row counts and layout changes. Data observability that monitors file freshness, volume and schema catches those gaps the morning they happen, so a difference between systems means a real matching difference.

- Does every unmatched item become a workflow object with an owner, an age and an audit trail?
- Do you read SWIFT MT950, camt.053 and our card and ACH settlement files as delivered, or do we pre-format them?
- What does year one cost including implementation, and what does year three cost if volume doubles?
- How long did your last comparable TLM migration take from contract to switching off TLM?
