SmartStream vs Gresham for cash, nostro, securities and derivatives reconciliation software at banks

smartstream vs gresham

SmartStream vs Gresham comes down to what you reconcile and what you already run. SmartStream, with its TLM line now sold as Smart Reconciliations, is usually the stronger choice for a large bank that reconciles cash, nostro and securities on one platform. Gresham Control is usually stronger when new trade and position feeds arrive constantly and deployment choice matters. Neither publishes a price, and neither ships with US core banking, Nacha or Federal Reserve references, which is where a bank-side platform such as BankAutomation, from $1,200 a month, fits.

Disclosure: BankAutomation is our product. It appears here only where the other two do not cover a US bank's daily settlement accounts, and the options are stated as we read each vendor's own published material.

SmartStream vs Gresham for cash and nostro reconciliation

SmartStream is usually the safer pick for a large bank. TLM has run bank cash and nostro matching for a long time, and the vendor sells cash and liquidity management beside it, so the same statement data can feed both. A bank already on TLM that is moving to Smart Reconciliations Premium keeps its rules and its people's knowledge, which is worth real money at migration time.

Gresham Control reads SWIFT messages, ISO 20022 and CSV and handles cash too. It tends to win when the bank wants one data integrity layer across cash, payments and positions and expects new sources every quarter. A bank that only needs MT940 or camt.053 against a nostro ledger usually pays for capability it does not use. If nostro is the whole brief, compare both against dedicated nostro reconciliation software before signing.

SmartStream vs Gresham for securities and derivatives

These are the workloads where both are serious and the choice is mostly about what the surrounding estate looks like. SmartStream fits a bank that wants reconciliation next to post-trade processing from one vendor. Gresham fits firms where feeds from brokers, custodians and clearing houses change often and the operations team needs to onboard them without a long project. Hedge funds and fund administrators lean to Gresham, which markets Control to them directly.

If neither feels right, Duco is the third name that comes up for capital markets data, and the detail is in our Gresham reconciliation alternatives and SmartStream TLM alternatives comparisons.

Deployment, ownership and what a renewal looks like

Both offer more than one deployment model. Gresham lists SaaS, on premise, hybrid and managed service, which matters if your institution has a hosting mandate. SmartStream lists cloud, SaaS and on premises. Ownership is the sharper difference. STG took Gresham private in July 2024 and merged it with Alveo, so ask for the product roadmap in writing. At renewal, both quote on reconciliation count, data volume and modules, and implementation is scoped separately.

Whichever you choose, treat the vendor as a supplier you will depend on for years. Many banks keep each vendor's security report, contract and insurance paperwork in one place, and a tool for certificate of insurance tracking stops a lapsed certificate going unnoticed between renewals.

Pricing for SmartStream, Gresham and a bank-side option

Neither vendor publishes a price, and the purchasing benchmarks we checked list no verified contract for either. Expect a license sized by reconciliation count and volume, plus a separate implementation fee. Ask both to price the same reconciliation list on the same term, with license and implementation split.

BankAutomation publishes its plans on the pricing page. Operations is $1,200 a month for 250,000 matched items and three sources. Platform is $3,900 a month for 2,000,000 items, unlimited sources, SSO and maker-checker approvals. Institution is $9,500 a month, and Enterprise is custom. It does not reconcile securities or custody positions.

Where a US bank or credit union fits

A US community or regional bank asking this question usually has a small capital markets workload and a large daily settlement one: ACH against FedACH windows, debit card and ATM networks, the Fed account, correspondents and suspense accounts. Neither vendor publishes US core, Nacha or Federal Reserve references, so that slice is better run on a platform built for it: ACH reconciliation software, Federal Reserve account reconciliation software and cash reconciliation software from a published price.

Questions buyers ask

Is SmartStream or Gresham better for reconciliation?

Neither is better across the board. SmartStream is usually stronger for large bank cash, nostro and securities estates already on TLM. Gresham Control is usually stronger for hedge fund, derivatives and other trade and position data where new feeds arrive often. Match the vendor to your largest workload and ask for a reference in your segment.

What are the key differences between SmartStream and Gresham?

SmartStream is built around bank reconciliation, cash and liquidity and post-trade processing, and Gresham around post-trade data integrity. Gresham offers SaaS, on premise, hybrid and managed service. SmartStream offers cloud, SaaS and on premises. Gresham is owned by STG and merged with Alveo, and both quote prices only.

How much do SmartStream and Gresham cost?

Both are quote only, with no published price list and no verified public contract benchmark for either. Quotes depend on reconciliation count, data volume, deployment and modules, and implementation is charged separately. For daily US settlement accounts, BankAutomation publishes plans from $1,200 a month.

Which is better for a US bank, SmartStream or Gresham?

For a US bank with a capital markets arm, SmartStream fits cash and securities matching and Gresham fits trade and position feeds. For ACH, card, Fed and core settlement accounts, neither publishes US references, so most banks pair a bank-side platform with one of them or use it alone.
