AutoRek alternatives for US banks, payments firms and asset managers, compared on fit and pricing

autorek alternatives

The best AutoRek alternative for a US institution depends on the workload. For securities, trade and capital markets data, Duco, Gresham Control, SmartStream or FIS Data Integrity Manager are the like for like replacements. For month end close and balance sheet certification, BlackLine or Trintech fit better. For a US bank or credit union that needs Fed, ACH, card, correspondent and suspense accounts cleared every day at a published price, BankAutomation starts at $1,200 a month and ReconArt's credit union blog states an average annual cost below $50,000. This guide maps each AutoRek workload to its realistic replacements, with the cases where AutoRek remains the right answer.

Disclosure: BankAutomation is our product. It appears in the tables with its weaknesses stated, and for several AutoRek workloads it is not the right answer.

What AutoRek is, and what it is good at

AutoRek is a Glasgow software company with more than 30 years in financial control software. It sells a reconciliation and financial control platform to banks, insurers, payments firms, asset managers and capital markets firms, with products marketed as AutoRek ARIA (its intelligence engine), AutoRek MION and RegToolKit for regulatory reporting. Its customer logos include Aegon, Royal London, eToro and ClearBank, and it states that its largest deployment has processed 2.4 billion transactions and that it handles a quarter of all cash transactions at banks in the United Kingdom.

Its reputation was built on regulated reconciliations: UK client money and client assets (CASS), safeguarding for payments and e-money firms, and regulatory reporting under regimes such as EMIR and MiFID II. That is where AutoRek is hardest to replace. In the US it is newer. It opened a US headquarters in New York's Chrysler Building, said it had signed six US clients across asset management, capital markets, insurance and payments in the preceding year, and in June 2026 added a Miami office with sales hires focused on hedge funds, alternative investment managers, banks and wealth managers. A US buyer is therefore often looking at AutoRek and its alternatives at the same time rather than replacing it, which makes the comparison below a shortlist exercise as much as a migration one.

Why US buyers look past AutoRek

Three reasons come up. The first is regulatory fit. Much of AutoRek's depth is in UK and EU regimes, and a US bank, broker-dealer or insurer needs its own rule sets: SEC Rule 15c3-3 customer protection for broker-dealers, Federal Reserve and FedACH settlement for banks, sponsor bank FBO account balancing for fintech programs. Ask any vendor to show the US version working, not the UK one relabeled.

The second is references. A US community bank or credit union wants to talk to another US institution of its size running the same core and the same Fed and ACH files. AutoRek's US client list is still short, and its named references are mostly UK. The third is price visibility. AutoRek quotes, like most of the category, and implementation is scoped separately; third-party reviews repeatedly mention a steep learning curve and a substantial setup project. Buyers with a narrower daily workload often want a price on the website and a lighter rollout.

Map the AutoRek workload before you shortlist

AutoRek often ends up holding several different jobs. Split them first, because the best replacement for each is usually a different product.

Pricing you can actually compare

AutoRek does not publish prices, and neither do Duco, Gresham, SmartStream or FIS. The public numbers in this category are few: ReconArt's average annual cost below $50,000 as stated on its credit union blog, the $40,125 median BlackLine contract on Vendr's pricing page, and BankAutomation's published plans. Operations is $1,200 a month for one process line, 250,000 matched items and three source connections. Platform is $3,900 a month with unlimited sources, maker-checker approvals and SSO. Institution is $9,500 a month for multi-entity groups. All of them are priced per institution, not per user. The full reconciliation software comparison for banks lists the public price information for sixteen platforms.

The comparison that matters is scope against price. An enterprise platform quoted to cover securities, client money and cash will look expensive against a daily cash queue, and cheap against three separate tools. If your AutoRek quote or renewal covers mostly bank cash, ACH and settlement accounts, price that slice on its own before accepting the bundle. If it covers mostly securities and regulatory reconciliations, the like for like enterprise vendors are the fair benchmark, and a lighter tool is not.

When AutoRek is still the right answer

  • You run UK or EU regulated entities alongside the US business and need CASS or safeguarding reconciliations with the rule sets already built. Few alternatives match that depth.
  • Your reconciliation work is tied to regulatory reporting such as EMIR or MiFID II and you want both in one vendor.
  • You are an insurer or asset manager whose reconciliations are mostly premium, claims, fund and position data rather than bank settlement files, and AutoRek's references in those sectors match yours.
  • You already have AutoRek working in one region and want one platform across regions. The switching cost usually outweighs a small price difference.

If the part of AutoRek your team actually uses is matching incoming customer receipts to open invoices, that job is cash application rather than reconciliation, and dedicated accounts receivable automation is usually a cheaper fit than any platform on this page.

Where BankAutomation fits for a US bank or credit union

BankAutomation is built for one job: the daily queue of breaks at a US bank or credit union. It reads the Federal Reserve statement and FIRD detail, FedACH settlement, card processor files, correspondent BAI2 statements, SWIFT MT940 and camt.053, and the GL, matches them under tolerances your controller approves, and turns every difference into an item with a classification, an owner and an age. The workloads are described on Federal Reserve account reconciliation software, payment reconciliation software and suspense account reconciliation software. It is not a regulatory reporting tool, it does not do client money or securities reconciliation, and it will not replace AutoRek for a firm whose problem is CASS.

How to run the evaluation

Step 01

Inventory by type and regulation

List every reconciliation with its source files, volume, jurisdiction and the regulation it supports. The list decides whether you need one enterprise platform or two lighter tools.

Step 02

Ask for US proof

For each vendor, ask to see a US reference of your size and type running your files: FIRD and FedACH for a bank, 15c3-3 for a broker-dealer, FBO balancing for a fintech program.

Step 03

Run one reconciliation in parallel

Load the same statement and ledger files into two systems for a few business days and compare the open item lists. Rule setup is where the time goes, so measure it on one account first.

Step 04

Price the slices separately

Ask for the quote broken down by workload and for implementation separately. Compare each slice with the published prices above before accepting a bundle.

Questions buyers ask

How much does AutoRek cost?

AutoRek does not publish pricing. It quotes per client based on the reconciliations in scope, volumes and deployment, and implementation is scoped separately. For benchmarks, ReconArt's credit union blog states an average annual cost below $50,000, Vendr reports a BlackLine median of $40,125 a year, and BankAutomation publishes plans from $1,200 a month.

Does AutoRek work in the US?

Yes. AutoRek has a US headquarters in New York, added a Miami office in June 2026, and says it has US clients across asset management, capital markets, insurance and payments. Its reference base and regulatory tooling are still deepest in the UK, so US buyers should ask for a US reference running the same rules they need.

What is the best AutoRek alternative for a US bank?

For a large bank with securities and many counterparties, Duco, SmartStream or FIS Data Integrity Manager. For a community or regional bank or credit union whose work is Fed, ACH, card, correspondent and suspense accounts, BankAutomation or ReconArt, with Trintech's Frontier Reconciliation software as the larger option. Bank-specific comparisons are in the ReconArt alternatives guide and the SmartStream TLM alternatives guide.

Is SmartStream or AutoRek better for large financial institutions?

For a large global bank, SmartStream is usually the stronger choice. It serves more than 2,000 institutions, including about 70 of the top 100 banks, and handles cash, securities and trade reconciliation at very high volume. AutoRek is lighter and quicker to deploy, with deep roots in UK client money and safeguarding, and suits insurers, asset managers and payment firms better than a global bank.

Who are AutoRek's main competitors?

In financial services reconciliation the usual shortlist is Duco, Gresham, SmartStream, FIS Data Integrity Manager and ReconArt, with BlackLine and Trintech when the requirement extends to close management. The IntelliMatch alternatives guide covers the FIS side in more detail.
